Experian have published a report on Inner City Vibrancy which illustrates the importance of students to city economies. It comes as no surprise to know that Manchester is top, but of interest to the North West is Lancaster is eighth. Although below Manchester and Leeds it is above Newcastle, Liverpool and Sheffield. The population of Lancaster urban is low for a city as can be seen from ONS data, but almost 1/3 of residents in Lancaster are students and there are more students than professionals www.experian.co.uk. The number of students therefore have a greater effect than in other urban areas where the total population is higher.
