My Squared Life

Feedback from My Squared Life course team confirmed the blog platform on Moodle would not be enabled so all posts need to bear in mind the UK legal environment.

The page view number in Samantha Gray’s blog looks like a useful addition to the Word Press site as is the twitter handle. The Google share at the top works as a blog but if the site is more than a blog it is advisable to put the links into the footer. The first time I looked at the blog the text was in pink and minutes later the font had changed and was in black. Curious. A video was not visible, I presume the site was not built on a responsive platform. The incorporation of Facebook and Twitter posts added great visual appeal and as posts are deigned to be shared as long as they are used in totality one would guess there are no copyright issues here. No comments were posted despite the high number of views.

Chiarapelizzari has some interesting posts on creativity. I liked the content on Edge’s principles of success.

When I added a picture to my earlier blog it only added as a link rather than the picture itself. Some bloggers’ pictures don’t seem to need time to load whereas others do. Unsure if this is a platform specific issue. Whilst a link to a PDF would get around this it would force readers to download a file which is another click so readers may click away. I think on reflection it must be due to me making it in word not saving it as a JPEG.

Harriet’s blog at uses a clever title and has shown tags used for posting. The videos worked on the iPad and I liked the layout which was easy to read.

Sarah Tate’s talk on 5 Tips on Being squared detailed the industry research executed on ensuring the course delivered value to industry, a great way to ensure that customer needs are met and delivered so a true marketing orientation and the numbers enrolled give an indication of the success commercially of that marketing approach. Both skills and mindset are seen to be important to making the group work work. The course curriculum was determined through crowdsourcing and there was not a single reference to QAA!

A particular paradigm again referred to by Sarah was the need to be T shaped where the downward stroke is representative of specialism and the broad brush across the top about the ability to communicate and discuss and ensure that active listening occurs. Solis in his TED video indicated that there was a tendency even with social media for people to talk more than to listen.

Sarah reinforced the value in an experiential learning approach in order to develop competence. There was however no discussion about students analysing themselves to determine their preferred learning style and an assumption built in that experiential learning is right for everybody. We shall see. Certainly if groups are mixed with a differing skills base there is the potential to learn from others and I am looking forward to getting more practical hands on experience which has been lacking in the last twenty years of an academic career. The value of people having their own opinions was highlighted so that students ensure they have the confidence to have opinions and try things out which they might not be able to do I the workplace. Students were encouraged to engage in other learning in areas of interest to them such as Google’s free analytics course.

Looking at Neil Perkin’s blog ‘Only Dead Fish’ it is interesting to see all the links on the page to encourage sharing. He has a follower counter and a reader counter. The use of the subscribe button is something I would like to add in to my blog. However the file did not open in Drop Box and it is a VCF file. I feel technologically challenged. I’ve signed up to Alpha test Fraggl. Time will tell. However just type Only Dead Fish into Google and see what a digital impression Perkin makes just with his blog after searching. Wow. He is doing lots right. And see how many circles he is in!

All of this research is interesting and helps to develop me in My Squared Life.
